A Delicious Homemade Tarter Sauce

I had to come up with a healthier version of homemade tarter sauce because I love it with my fish and seafood dishes and since I eat lot of fish and seafood I needed a healthier version of tarter sauce.

This tarter sauce is great tasting and simple to prepare. It’s much healthier than the processed varieties from the grocery store that are normally made with unhealthy oils and ingredients. If tarter sauce is normally not something you would accompany with fish or seafood meals, it could be because the store bought varieties don't taste so great.

Give this one a try, you'll be amazed how nice and fresh it tastes. It's wonderful with any fried or baked fish, fish cakes and many varieties of seafood.

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup chopped dill pickles
  • 1 t capers, chopped
  • 2 t Dijon mustard
  • 2 t shallots, chopped
  • 2 t lemon juice
  • 2-3 drops Tabasco sauce, more if you prefer spice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Combine all ingredient in a bowl. Refrigerate for a couple of hours to allow the flavours to blend.

If time permits, it's worth making your own homemade mayonnaise for this recipe, it really makes a difference in taste, not to mention, it's much healthier. Otherwise, you can always use store bought mayonnaise, just be sure to select a healthier brand.

You may also get creative with this sauce by adding additional hot sauce, fresh chopped herbs, crushed garlic or any other spices you enjoy, this is what makes this sauce extra special.

Once you find the right combination of flavours that suit your tastes, you will always enjoy this tarter sauce with your next fish or seafood meal.  The processed varieties from the grocery stores will simply not measure up.
