A Healthy Homemade Tomato Sauce Is A Must In Your Pantry

A basic homemade tomato sauce is great to have on hand for it can be used in countless dishes. There is no need to buy processed brands at the grocery store which are filled with preservatives and lesser quality ingredients.  This healthier version is simple to make and delicious.

Even though, this sauce is consider a basic tomato sauce, it's very flavourful.  So it's wonderful on it's own or you can use it as a base sauce and add other favourite ingredients.  

You may want to add more fresh herbs or sauteed vegetables such as onions, eggplant or peppers.  If you enjoy spicy food, add hot pepper(s) or hot sauce.

Feel free to adjust any ingredients to suit your family's tastes.  

  • 4 litres of tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh oregano
  • ½ cup fresh basil
  • ¼ cup organic sugar or agave syrup
  • 1 T salt
  • fresh black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced

Add tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, salt and pepper to a large pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. In a separate pan, sauté garlic in olive oil until slightly brown and fragrant, then add garlic and oil to the tomato sauce.

If you prefer your sauce to be spicy, add a chopped chili pepper.

Place in hot sterilized jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace. Seal with sterilized lids and bands. Process in a canner for 30 minutes. Remove jars and allow to cool completely (24 hours) before checking for a proper seal.

Storing this delicious tomato sauce in canning jars is a great storing method; however, if you don’t have the tools or the time, freezer bags work just as well.
