Super Supplements: A List of the Essentials

Super supplements provide your body with an unbelievable health boost that helps your body cope with stress caused by harmful toxins and additives. They also help your body function more efficiently and they provide extra protection against sickness and disease.

These supplements should be taken in addition to your regular natural health supplements to provide your body with a complete wellness program.

What are super supplements?

There are many supplements referred to as “super”, it’s a great name to give something extra attention, this is probably why there’s so much reference to them. However, in my experience and extensive research, I have found specific supplements that stand out from the rest. These health supplements are supported by heavy scientific research and are proven to provide your body with incredible health promoting benefits.

The following is a list of super supplements I feel no one should live without. They offer incredible benefits to the body. If you’re interested in learning my specific super supplement recommendations, see the “My Favourites” section.

Super Supplements

Antioxidants are an incredible "super supplement" because they are molecules that fight free radical cells in your body. Free radical cells are unhealthy cells that cause sickness and disease. Currently, they are responsible for over 200 different sicknesses and diseases and this number is growing steadily.

Antioxidants will actually fight and neutralize free radical cells, stopping them in their tracks. If you want to prevent sickness and disease, you will want to get a good amount of antioxidants into your body, every day.

Antioxidants are found in many foods. Choose the foods that contain the highest amounts; such as cocoa, fruit, vegetables, herbs, nuts and seeds. Antioxidants are also found in green drinks. Always be sure to select premium products that are cold processed, because heat destroys nutrients and this includes antioxidants.

I consider fiber to be a super supplement because it is extremely important for your digestive system and is often missed in many diets. Digesting high amounts of processed, preserved and prepared food with harmful additives can cause many problems to the digestive track. Fiber assists your system in properly disposing waste, eliminating toxins and keeping things moving naturally. It also provides many health promoting nutrients to your body; it’s essential for proper bodily functions.

Fresh fruits and vegetables can give your body adequate amounts of fiber, but you must get sufficient amounts on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many individuals don’t get enough fruits and vegetables each day, so substituting with a high fiber supplement is an excellent way to ensure you get fiber into your diet.

High fiber supplements are best taken first thing in the morning and come in powders which are easily mixed with juice or water or if you prefer, a capsule form is also available.

Green drinks:

Fruits and vegetables provide you with essential fiber but they also provide you with essential health-promoting minerals and vitamins. If you find it hard to eat your daily requirement of fruits and vegetables, then green drinks can give your body the necessary nutrients it’s missing.

Green drinks provide your body with fruits, vegetables, herbs and greens in powder form and is great mixed with water or juice, or you can add it to your smoothie or protein shake. There are many varieties and flavours of green drinks available, be sure to find varieties that are processed to preserve the important minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. This information should be clear on the label, look for cold pressed or unprocessed products.

This super supplement is your digestive system’s best friend because probiotics provide your body with live bacteria cultures which is the “good bacteria” your body requires. Bad bacteria is created from toxins that are digested from the air you breathe, the food you eat, the drinks you drink, the prescriptions/medications you take, the products you use in your home or on your body and from the land you live on.

When a lot of toxins are digested, it creates an abundance of bad bacteria in your digestive track. Resulting in bloating, excessive gas and stomach upset, among other serious ailments.

Ideally, there should always be an equal balance of both good and bad bacteria in your system for it to run properly and digest foods properly. Probiotics help restore this proper balance, even if you don’t necessary feel any of the above problems, probiotics can still be very beneficial to help your digestive system function properly.

Probiotics are found in yogurt and other fermented foods, but you can also supplement probiotics which is a great way to ensure you get the appropriate amounts. Probiotics are available for adults, children and infants, which is especially great for babies with colic.

Digestive Enzymes:

Digestive enzymes is another super supplement that provides your body with many health benefits. Enzymes help break down the food in your stomach and intestines. Every food requires a different enzyme to help break it down and although your body does create these enzymes, many factors can prevent this from happening successfully. This can cause stomach upset, excessive gas or bloating and fatigue, among other conditions.

Enzymes are first created in your mouth, so food must be properly chewed for a sufficient amount of enzymes to be produced. Since different food groups are often eaten together, i.e.; meat and potatoes, the body can have difficulty keeping up with producing the different enzymes needed to break down the different foods eaten.

This is when digestive enzymes can be very helpful. Not only does your body get sufficient amount of all the essential enzymes but they also help your body get rid of any harmful toxins or additives you may have digested. Be sure to take this super supplement with food.

Essential Fatty Acids:

Omega 3, 6 and 9 Essential Fatty Acids are extremely important to your body, they virtually help every system in your body function more efficient. These super supplements are “essential” just as the name suggests, but unfortunately, our bodies are unable to produce them (other than small amounts of Omega 9), so we must get them from specific foods and this is why many individuals are deficient in Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), mainly Omega 3.

Your body works best when you get EFA’s in proper ratios, the ideal ratio is 2:1:1; Omega 3:6:9. However, since there is such an imbalance of these three fatty acids found in foods, this reflects the imbalances most of us have in our bodies. Inflammation is one of the top ailments that is caused from this imbalance and inflammation is the beginning of many sicknesses and diseases. You can get your

Essential Fatty Acids from oils, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fish or you can supplement with capsules or specific oils that contain the proper ratios.

Cleanse and Detox:

Regular cleansing and detoxing is important to help your body clean itself from the toxins we digest. Just as it’s necessary to do spring cleaning in your home, your body needs the same attention. Cleansing and detoxing products contain various herbs and spices specifically designed to cleanse organs and other systems in the body, as well as, remove toxins and other build up in your body.

There are many products available to help cleanse your body; this industry is becoming very popular. Ideally you should select a supplement program that best suits your personal preference. Some prefer a complete 30 detox program while others prefer a simple daily detox tea. Choose a program and product that is suitable for you.

It’s always good to accompany any cleansing or detox program with “clean eating”, where you completely omit processed, packaged or prepared food and eat only fresh, raw or slightly cooked organic food. I eat organic protein with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and I try to eat my foods raw or slightly cooked with healthy fats, along with my detox teas or supplements and I clean my body successfully.

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is an incredible super supplement with many health benefits, more than most people know about. Not only is it a great cooking staple because it tastes great, adds wonderful flavor to food and can sustain high heat, but it’s also a medium chain fat, which means your body cannot store it as fat, so it’s immediately used as energy. This alone makes this product incredible. However, it is also widely used for many other purposes.

Coconut oil helps heal and rejuvenate your skin, hair, bones and teeth. It increases metabolism, helps with weight loss, helps maintain cholesterol levels, assists digestion, increases immunity and it’s commonly used for treatment of High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, HIV and Heart and Kidney conditions…and many other medicinal purposes.

This product is fantastic and should be in every pantry, medicine cabinet and cosmetic shelf. Be sure to select cold-pressed organic extra virgin coconut oil.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful super supplement that is another must-have cooking staple and also possess amazing health benefits. It tastes delicious. it can be added to numerous dishes and it’s amazing on salads and vegetables.

It has been used for many years to cleanse and heal the body. It’s also considered to be a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. It fights germs and bacteria and many people use the well-known “healing drink” of apple cider vinegar and honey to fend off coughs, colds and viruses. It helps restore energy and relieve stiffness.

Be sure to select organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with “mother” in it, which occurs naturally.

Vitamin D:

Although this vitamin is present in your regular natural vitamin/mineral supplement (link to vitamin benefits), the doses are normally very low. In all incidences, you should get extra doses of Vitamin D because it does amazing things to your health by protecting you from sickness and disease. It’s one of the most important vitamins and yet the most missed.

Deficiency in Vitamin D is linked to Cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, Osteoporosis, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Hypertension.
Although, we can get sufficient amounts of Vitamin D from the sun, 10-15 minutes, a few times each week delivers more than adequate amounts; unfortunately, many use sunscreen or stay out of the sun all together, making it impossible to reach the necessary amounts.

You must know what your Vitamin D levels are, so be sure to have your levels checked with your health practitioner. This way if you are deficient, you can supplement accordingly and even if your levels are where they should be, continue to supplement a good amount each day. Talk to your health practitioner. Vitamin D comes in capsule form or drops which are easily absorbed into the body.

Vitamin C:

Another vitamin that’s extremely important to your overall health and many are lacking. Vitamin C is known to help prevent and cure many ailments including strengthening your immune system, this is why it is so commonly used for colds and flu. It’s a powerful antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral and anti-inflammatory vitamin.

We need large amounts of this vitamin so it’s best to supplement because trying to get enough Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables would mean eating copious amounts. The body can handle large amounts of this vitamin, so keep your dose up and you’ll stay healthy.

Be sure to get a good quality vitamin, made from 100% L-ascorbate, to ensure your body absorbs it successfully.

These are the super supplements that I feel everyone needs. If you consume these supplements regularly, you’ll notice an incredible improvement in how your body functions and how you feel. Your health improves and you stay healthy.

Always be sure to select premium foods and products and always consider how the item is processed, remember heat kills the vitamins, minerals and nutrients we’re after. Do your want your body to fully absorb and take advantage of these super supplements.
